ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Visiting Dayton captured the opener of a three-game Atlantic 10 series over the St. Bonaventure baseball team, 6-3, despite a late rally effort by the Bonnies.
Sloppy defense by the Bonnies infield opened the door for Dayton to take the lead early, and then control in the middle innings.
Dayton grabbed an unearned run in the first, but the Bonnies would answer in the second on a run-scoring groundout from Alex Hebenstreit for a 1-1 tie.
The Flyers went back in front on another unearned run in the fifth and pulled away in the sixth following RBI hits by Michael Smith, Danny MacDougall and Grayson Carpenter.
Hebenstreit pulled the Bonnies within a 5-2 score with his two-out RBI double to left-center in the seventh, but the Flyers immediately got that run back on Michael Smith's triple to the gap in right.
Bona (12-25-1, 6-13 A-10) threatened in the eighth with back-to-back one out singles from Chris Hoalcraft and Anthony Fernandez, chasing Dayton starter Sawyer Jensen from the game. Reliever Austin McNabb coaxed a double play ball on his first pitch out of the bullpen, however, ending the threat.
In the ninth, the Bonnies made things extremely interesting by loading the bases with two away. A hit batter forced home a run, placing the potential tying run on base before Anthony Fernandez hit into a game-ending fielder's choice.
Jensen was outstanding for the Flyers, moving to 6-2 on the year with 7.1 innings of two-run work, did not walk a batter and struck out two. Carson Samuels earned the save by getting out of the ninth inning jam.
Bonnies ace David James pitched better than his final line as he allowed three earned runs over six innings, walking one while striking out eight.
Smith delivered three hits and three RBIs out of the two-hole in the lineup for Dayton (22-19, 7-12 A-10).
