Bonnies Fall To Canisius On Late Score, 1-0

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team was unable to overcome a game-deciding score in the 86th minute on Sunday afternoon, falling to Little Three rival Canisius, 1-0, as grey skies rolled over the Marra Athletics Complex.

Though the Bonnies (1-2) kept things even for the vast majority of the game, fighting to control the midfield and finding lanes to attack, the Golden Griffins (2-1), last season's runners-up in the MAAC, pushed away every opportunity and eventually found daylight down the sideline to take a late lead.

A pivotal piece in Bona's performance was senior Juliana Castellano, who recorded over 85 minutes of shutout goalkeeping until Canisius broke through. She made six saves in that time and protected the box wisely, including multiple diving efforts to control chaos after well-placed corner kicks from the visitors.

The Brown and White saw a fair share of offensive opportunities early in the first half but could not capitalize. In the game's third minute, freshman Liana Tata placed a free kick on net which was sent back by Canisius goalkeeper Alexa Turmel. After a few ricochets around the box, the ball found fellow freshman Moran Moscovici in the center of the field. A wide-open Moscovici took aim and fired, but to the dismay of the Bonaventure sideline, her attempt soared over the crossbar and into possession of the Golden Griffins.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Bonnies saw two more scoring chances come their way as sophomores Addison Brown and Caitlyn Kellogg each recorded shots on goal, though both were saved by Turmel and turned back the other way.

After earning the late lead, the Golden Griffins were able to hold on and secure a winning result, putting an exclamation point on a second half in which they allowed just one shot.
