St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team picked up its third win of the season in dominating fashion Sunday, earning a 4-0 victory over Cleveland State to put an exclamation point on the program's Senior Day.

The Bonaventure offense started the game off hot as the first chance of the contest resulted in a goal. In the fourth minute, graduate student Eduarda Silva received the ball at the left edge of the box. After shaking a Vikings defender with a cutback move, she lined up a shot which hit the left post and trickled in, marking her first goal in a Bonnies uniform and putting the hosts up, 1-0.

Cleveland State (0-6) looked to respond quickly after Bona's goal with a chance in the 13th minute, but a save by freshman goalkeeper Callie Turpin eased the pressure and kept the Vikings scoreless.

The Bonnies (3-3) stayed aggressive on the offensive side of the field shortly after Turpin's save. In the 18th minute, freshman Sadie Richardson collected a misplayed ball in the midfield, sending it into the box to redshirt junior Audrey Cadman. Cadman wasted no time putting it in the back of the net and extending the hosts' advantage.

In the 23rd minute, sophomore Kaitlyn Jamison drew a penalty kick opportunity after a visiting defender tripped her up in the box. Freshman Liana Tata stepped up to take the shot but was denied by CSU goalkeeper Summer Swords.

Freshman Aoife Murphy put a bow on the first half in the 36th minute. After a pass from classmate Ava Dimperio reached Murphy at the top of the box, she ripped a shot which found the top-left corner of the net to push the Bonnies' lead to 3-0 before the halftime whistle.  

Bona's three first half goals marked the program's largest scoring output in a single half against Division I competition since Aug. 26, 2018, when the team punched in three second-half goals at UMass Lowell.

It was relatively quiet second stanza compared to the first. In the 66th minute, a misplayed pass by Swords found Richardson all alone in the middle of the box. Richardson's shot had to be delivered on short notice and was turned away by the CSU keeper. Silva tried to add a second goal from distance with just a few minutes to go in the game, but nothing amounted from the chance. 

In the final moments of the game, freshman Alexis Olson won a challenge at the edge of the box that left her alone with Swords. After an initial shot deflected off the Vikings' goalie, the ball returned to the first-year Bonnie who fired a second shot, finding the back of the net for her first collegiate score.

Turpin earned the start and earned the win in net, recording six saves and her second clean sheet of the season.

Prior to kickoff, the Bonnies celebrated their five graduating seniors. Juliana Castellano, Eduarda Silva, Toni Domingos, Nayelle Heredia and Naomi Sharma Tobar were each honored.

"There was some great movement up top and excellent balls in behind. We said at halftime that anything can happen; it's not over. I think Cleveland State really came out strong and dominated the first 10 or 15 minutes of the second half, but we responded.

"The seniors have set the culture of this new team with all these young players. They care about their teammates and we're fortunate to have them. We're happy to have this result for them today."

The Bonnies return to the road next Sunday following their four-game homestand as they will travel to face Long Island at 1:00 p.m.
