The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fought off strong winds and snow to top Siena, 13-5, in its season opener Tuesday afternoon at Corning Memorial Stadium.
After Siena opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, the Bonnies responded with a 5-0 run to take control of the game. Freshman Katelyn Faas got the Bona attack rolling with her fist career goal from senior Courtney Gibbons at the 16:36 mark. Sophomore Kimberly Ross and senior Nicole Motondo notched a pair of goals just two minutes apart to make it a 3-1 Bona advantage. Motondo struck again six minutes later with her second goal of the game and sophomore Brenna Houghton closed out the run with a free position goal with 1:06 remaining.
The Saints tallied their second goal with just 23 ticks left in the half to draw within three, 5-2, heading into the break.
The brown and white lengthened its lead 54 seconds into the second half, as sophomore Katie Hurley lit up the scoreboard with an unassisted goal. Siena pulled to within two after back-to-back scores just a couple minutes part made it 6-4.
Hurley hit the back of the net again at the 22:49 mark for the first of four straight Bonaventure scores over a 10-minute span. Faas, Motondo and senior Sarah Dressler notched the other three goals, putting the Bonnies up 10-4 with 13 minutes remaining.
With the score 10-5, St. Bonaventure closed the game with three consecutive goals from Houghton, Motondo and senior Kate McNerney to seal the victory.
The Bonnies out shot Siena 29-14 and held a 12-8 edge in draw controls.
Playing in her first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2005, Motondo led the way with five points on four goals and an assist. Hurley, Houghton and Faas all recorded two goals each. Dressler finished with a goal and an assist.
Junior Courtney Hastrich tuned away three shots en route to claiming the win in net. Sophomore Eboni Preston took the cage in the early in the second half and also made three saves.
St. Bonaventure returns to the Southern Tier for the second of four straight games at Corning Memorial Stadium. The Bonnies will take on Albany on Friday at 4 p.m.
