DAYTON, Ohio - In the club's second last match of the 2007 season, the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team battled to a scoreless double overtime draw for its second straight tie on Friday evening at Dayton.
With the result, the Bonnies extend their unbeaten streak to three games and improve to 6-6-3 (3-3-2), while the Flyers move to 9-4-3 (3-3-2) with both teams still in the hunt for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
"Dayton has had a history of great success at home and to pick up a point on the road is a great accomplishment," said head coach Mel Mahler. "Tonight's match was a game with a lot of missed opportunities for both clubs as neither side could put the ball in the back of the net."
The Brown and White's best chance to break into the scoring column materialized in the second half when a Dayton defender dragged down sophomore Matt Culo inside the box. With a penalty kick awarded for the infraction, senior goalkeeper Zac Gibbens turned away Culo's shot to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Freshman goalkeeper David Flynn posted the third shutout of his collegiate career and second in the last three matches by stopping five shots from crossing the goal line. The Lancaster, Pa. native has conceded only one goal in his previous 310 minutes between the posts.
"Flynn made some big saves for us tonight and diffused a lot of dangerous serves into the box," said Mahler. "Our entire backline played an excellent match."
Dayton owned a 12-9 shot advantage for the contest, including a 6-2 margin in the second 45 minutes of play. Senior striker Nikola Vasilev paced the Bonnies up front with four total shots, including three that found the target.
The Brown and White enter Sunday's regular season finale still alive for the postseason tournament with a victory and favorable results from around the conference. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Musketeers.
