Keleher, Thompson lead Bonnies to a pair of wins

March 6, 2007

Final Stats

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The right arms of senior Christine Keleher and freshman Sherri Thompson were all the St. Bonaventure softball team needed on Tuesday as it defeated Campbell, 1-0, and Charleston Southern, 6-1, in a pair of non-conference games at Buccaneer Field.

Keleher helped the Bonnies avenge a loss to Campbell earlier in the week by tossing a two-hit shutout. Keleher struck out eight batters and allowed just one walk as she improved to 2-1.

The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning as right fielder Caitlin Grattan got things started with a clutch two-out double. Sophomore Ashley Kotz mimicked Grattan in the very next at-bat with a double of her own to bring home the senior for the 1-0 lead.

Keleher kept the Camels off the scoreboard the rest of the way as only five betters reached base in the game with none of them advancing past second.

In game two, Thompson picked up right where Keleher left off as she held Charleston Southern scoreless until an unearned run came across in the seventh inning. Thompson finished with eight strikeouts, no walks and gave up just five hits. Now 2-3 on the season, Thompson has allowed just three free passes in 29 1/3 innings of work.

The Bona bats provided run support for Thompson early and often as the Bonnies plated all six of their runs in the first three innings.

Sophomore Katie Pazda led off the game with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by senior catcher Anna Nagro.

St. Bonaventure expanded its lead with three runs in the second to make it 4-0. Three-straight singles from Patricia McKeon, Grattan and junior Kirstin Strong loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore Amanda Kotz followed suit with an RBI single to score McKeon making it 2-0. The bases remained loaded with two outs as sophomore Brianna Bricker picked up an RBI with a walk to make it 3-0. Again, it was Nagro taking advantage with runners in scoring position as she laced her second RBI single of the game to score Kotz.

Pazda knocked in the Bonnies final two runs in the third to push it to a six-run lead, at 6-0. With one out and the bases loaded, Pazda lifted a ball into right field that scored McKeon from third and Strong from second thanks to throwing error.

Nagro, Strong and Amanda Kotz each enjoyed multi-hit games as the Bonnies pounded out 12 in the game. Nagro and Pazda each finished with two RBI, while Strong and McKeon scored twice.

With the two wins, St. Bonaventure now stands at 4-4.

The Bonnies will closeout their stay in Charleston with a pair of games tomorrow starting with a doubleheader against Bowling Green starting at noon.
