Bonnies move into first place with 15-9 win at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team improved into 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 and moved into sole possession of first place with its 15-9 win over Duquesne on Tuesday evening at Rooney Field.

Sophomore Katelyn Faas had a game-high five goals, including four in the second half, to help the Bonnies (5-4) to their fourth-straight win. It marked the first conference game of the season for the Dukes as they fell to 5-6 overall.

The first half featured just eight goals at the Brown and White took a 5-3 lead into the locker room.

The second half was a whole different story as Duquesne tied the score up at 5-5 with a pair of goals to start the half, but a pair of goals from Faas and a free position score from freshman Molly Hastrich gave the lead back to St. Bonaventure at 8-5.

After the Dukes scored the sixth goal in the opening 10 minutes to make it 8-6, but the Bonnies responded with their second 3-0 run of the half to take a commanding 11-6 lead with 17:14 left to play. Hastrich scored her second-straight goal for the Brown and White off a pass from sophomore Keri Vito, while junior Kimberly Ross and Faas notched unassisted tallies.

Leading 11-7 with just over 11 minutes to play, back-to-back goals Faas and Vito put the game away making the score 13-7.

St. Bonaventure scored on eight of its 12 shots in the second half as pair of Duquesne goalkeepers went without a save in the final frame.

Junior Eboni Preston was superb in net, as the Bonnies were outshot 34-25 for the game. Preston stopped a season-high 15 shots en route to picking up her fifth win of the season.

Ross netted her seventh hat trick of the season, while junior Brenna Houghton, Vito and freshman Patty Nessle all had three points each. Hastrich scored two goals and classmate Lynsey Wagner rounded out the scoring with fifth goal of the season.

St. Bonaventure will now have a much-deserved week off from game action until it hosts Binghamton on Tuesday, April 17.
