BUFFALO, N.Y. - Despite scoring just three runs on five hits over two games, the St. Bonaventure softball team picked up a split in its doubleheader at Canisius on Wednesday night thanks to the right arm of Sherri Thompson.

The Bona freshman fired a shutout in the nightcap for a 2-0 win, helping the Bonnies rebound from a 4-1 defeat in game one at the Demske Sports Complex.

Thompson has been the tough-luck loser on several occasions this season, but did a great job of allowing just one walk and scattering seven hits to earn her third victory of the season. The shutout is the first of Thompson's career, but the seventh time this season she has held an opponent to two runs or less.

In game two victory, St. Bonaventure got on the board in the first inning as sophomore Kathryn Pazda drove home junior Brianna Bricker with an RBI single into right field. Sophomore pinch-runner Blair Freeman scored the insurance run in the fifth on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 2-0.

Canisius had several opportunities with runners in scoring position throughout the game, but was never able to plate run off of Thompson.

Game one watch a matchup between a pair of senior pitchers in Christine Keleher and the Griffs' Courtney Piar.

Pair got the best of the Bona bats as she allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in five innings of work before giving way to sophomore Mallory Aldred.

Keleher had things under control until a three-run fifth inning gave Canisius a commanding 4-0 lead. Keleher went the distance for the Brown and White yielding six hits and walking five. She also struck out seven as she fell to 6-5 on the season.

Bricker had the only two hits in the game for the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure will be back in action this weekend with a pair of Atlantic 10 doubleheaders at McGraw-Jennings Field. The Bonnies will host Fordham on Saturday and La Salle on Sunday. Game one on both days is scheduled to start at noon.
