Final Stats
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
The St. Bonaventure softball team managed just eight hits on the day, but received a pair of solid pitching performances to help salvage a split against La Salle in Sunday's Atlantic 10 doubleheader at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Despite another great outing by freshman Sherri Thompson the Bonnies fell 1-0 in the opener, but rebounded with a 3-1 win in game two with Christine Keleher on the mound.
St. Bonaventure now stands at 12-14 on the season and 4-5 in the Atlantic 10. The split moves the Explorers' record to 13-18 and 6-7 in league play.
In the opener, the Explorers scored the game's lone run in the second inning. Pitcher Laura Dezlot helped her own cause as she reached base on an error and came around to score on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.
That was enough for DeZolt, as she gave up four hits and recorded nine strikeouts in the complete game victory to improve to 8-9 on the season.
Thompson was the tough-luck loser for the Bonnies as she fell to 4-8 with the loss. Thompson hasn't allowed an earned run in 23-straight innings and now sports a league-low 1.11 ERA.
Junior Brianna Bricker had two of the four Bonaventure hits in the game, while classmate Patricia McKeon and freshman Stephanie Narde hade the others.
The Bonnies got on the board quickly in game two. After a single by Bricker, senior Caitlin Grattan homered to straight away center field to give St. Bonaventure a 2-0 lead.
The Explorers cut the lead in half in the sixth when Mary Pat Conville doubled home Kelli Curcio to make it 2-1.
St. Bonaventure tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Sophomore Kathryn Pazda laced a double down the left field line, scoring junior Kirstin Strong all the way from first for the 3-1 lead.
That was all Keleher needed as the senior shutdown the La Salle bats in the seventh to seal the win. Keleher gave up just two hits and struck out five en route to picking up her seventh win of the season.
Grattan went 2-for-3 in game two with her second home run of the season and two RBI. Bricker finished the day 3-for-5 at the leadoff spot.
St. Bonaventure will hit the road during the week for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders. The Bonnies will take on Buffalo on Tuesday and Hartford on Thursday.
