Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y. -
The St. Bonaventure softball team took both games of its non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening against Buffalo at Nan Harvey Stadium. The Bonnies took the opener 5-0 and scored two runs in the top of the seventh to win game two 4-2.
The sweep is the first of the season for St. Bonaventure as it evens its record at 14-14. The Bulls are now 3-39 on the season.
Freshman Sherri Thompson went this distance in game one, tossing her third shutout of the season to improve to 5-8. Thompson held the Bulls without a hit until the sixth inning and gave up just two in the game. She also struck out a career-high 11 batters and has now gone 30-straight innings without allowing at earned run.
In game two, senior Christine Keleher went the distance on the mound to up her record to 8-6. Keleher allowed two runs on six hits and finished with nine strikeouts.
Freshman Stephanie Narde headed a 21-hit attack for the Bona bats on the afternoon. Narde went 5-for-7 at the dish with two RBI. Sophomore Ashley Kotz had a big day, going 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Caitlin Grattan collected three hits, while classmate Anna Nagro went 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of doubles.
In the opener, the Bonnies did all their damage in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Amanda Kotz drove in the first run of the three-run fifth with an RBI single to score Patricia McKeon. Narde then brought in both Kotz sisters with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
McKeon was responsible for both Bona runs in the sixth as she brought home both Grattan and sophomore Kathryn Pazda with a single up the middle.
That was more than enough support for Thompson as she allowed just six base runners the entire game.
Buffalo got to Keleher early on and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two. The senior right hander allowed just two hits the rest of the way, giving the Bona bats a chance for the comeback.
The Bonnies answered the call in the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2. Narde led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on the play. Junior Kirstin Strong plated Narde with a double down the left field line to make it 3-2. Nagro followed suit with two outs, lacing her own double down the field line to score Strong giving the Bonnies a 4-2 lead.
Keleher made quick work of the Bulls in the seventh, striking out the last two batters of the game.
St. Bonaventure will be back in action on Thursday with another non-conference doubleheader. The Bonnies will travel to Connecticut to take on Harford.
