Final Stats
DAYTON, Ohio -
Apparently no one told the Bona bats or mother nature the game wasn't in Western New York.
Two days after having its home opener moved to Dayton, Ohio due to winter conditions in Western New York, the St. Bonaventure softball team looked right at home at UD Stadium as it battled through the cold and snow to earn its first Atlantic 10 win of the season with a 13-11 triumph over the Flyers on Friday afternoon.
The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was called in the top of third with the Bonnies leading 5-1 thanks to heavy snow flurries. They will resume the game tomorrow at noon if possible.
A wild affair, the opener featured a combined 24 runs, 23 hits, six errors and four home runs. The win is the first for the Brown and White in conference play as they improve to 8-10 overall and 1-2 in the A-10. Dayton is now 5-16 and 1-6 in league play.
Eight different players recorded a hit for St. Bonaventure in game one led by three hits from junior Brianna Bricker and sophomore Kathryn Pazda. Bricker went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double, a home run, three runs and three RBI. Pazda added a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
Bricker opened the scoring in game one with a two-run shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the first to give the Bonnies an early 2-0 lead.
After Dayton made it 2-1 in the top of the second inning, the Bona bats were back at it again in their half of the second, plating five runs to expand the lead to 7-1. An RBI single by Pazda scored junior Kirstin Strong for the first run. Bricker then picked up her third RBI of the game with a single into left field to plate classmate Patricia McKeon. With Pazda and Bricker in scoring position, senior Anna Nagro cleared the base paths with a three-run home run to make it 7-1.
The Flyers responded with one run in the third and an error-fueled seven in the fourth to take its first lead at 9-7. Dayton capitalized on three St. Bonaventure errors in the fourth inning as all seven runs against senior Christine Keleher were unearned.
Not bothered by the big inning, the Bonnies fought back by scoring the games next six runs to take back the lead at 13-9. The Brown and White did most of their damage in the bottom of the sixth inning as Strong broke a 9-9 tie with a game-winning three-run home run to score Caitlin Grattan and Amanda Kotz.
Dayton threatened in seventh by scoring two runs before Keleher slammed the door shut.
Despite giving up 11 runs on 11 hits, Keleher went the distance to improve to 5-3 on the season. Only four of the 11 runs she gave up were earned.
Nagro finished with a season-high four RBI, highlighted by her three-run shot in the second, while Strong added two runs to go along with her three-run home run. Grattan went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
