Bonnies drop home opener to Akron

Sept. 7, 2007

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team dropped its first game of the year as Akron's Jordan Baranowski scored in the 99th minute of overtime to give the Zips a 2-1 win this afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The win keeps Akron's record unblemished at 2-0-1, while St. Bonaventure evens out at 1-1-1.

The Brown and White turned in a strong first half and got on the board early as freshman Courtney Bosse tallied her second collegiate goal just 1:42 into the game. Fellow freshman Anna Cunningham found Bosse streaking down the right side to start the play. Bosse was then able to beat the Akron keeper, who had come to far out of the goal, with a loft shot from 10-yards beyond the right side of the goal box.

Despite constant pressure from the Bonnies in the opening 10 minutes, the Zips bounced back in the 13th minute as Kristen Gregg hammered home a rebound that came off the post from a shot by Jordan Clark.

St. Bonaventure owned a 9-3 shot advantage at the break, but was unable to beat Akron goalie Krystin Wilson for a second time.

Neither team could find the net in the second half as the Bonnies rotated in freshman Nicole Markert. Markert turned away three shots in the final frame of regulation as did Wilson. Akron held an 8-7 advantage in shots.

With just 52 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Baranowski found the back of the Bonaventure net on a 2-on-1 one with teammate Britni Back against Markert. Back forced Bona keeper Markert to play her and then dumped the ball off to Baranowski, who put it away.

For the game, St. Bonaventure held a 17-12 edge in shots. Markert finished with three saves in 55 minutes of action.

The Bonnies will be back in action on Sunday when they host Cornell at 1 p.m. at McGraw-Jennings Field.
