The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team pulled out its second straight Atlantic 10 win on Saturday, October 25, over Duquesne 2-0 at McGraw Jennings Field.
With the win, the Bonnies (4-4-4) A-10 record improves to 2-2-1, while Duquesne falls to 1-3-1 in A-10 play. In addition, with today's win the Brown and White picked up three huge points in the A-10 standings to move past the Dukes, who were tied with St. Bonaventure to begin the day.
The Bonnies got out in front early, when in the 16th minute sophomore Dan Mitchell received a pass across the box from junior Sam Maheu and slid it past the Duquesne goalie to give the Brown and White a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the first half was a back and forth affair with no major scoring chances for either side. The Bonnies outshot the Dukes 9-6 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Brown and White came out aggressive to start the second half earning a corner kick in the 57th minute. The ball was volleyed out by the Duquesne defense to sophomore Brett Allen who served it back into the box where classmate Fabrizio Savarino headed it home to give the Bonnies a 2-0 lead.
The rest of the game was a hotly contested affair that saw five yellow cards handed out in the second half alone.
"This was a great win for our team," said head coach Mel Mahler. "We executed very well today, and to get back-to-back in conference wins is huge for us right now." In net for the Brown and White was sophomore David Flynn who played a solid game making eight saves in the contest.
"We are playing much better as a unit," Mahler said. "The timing couldn't be better because now we have to go on the road for four straight conference games as we try to make our A-10 Championship push."
The Bonnies are back in action Friday, October 31, at 8:00 p.m. when they travel to Saint Louis University for another key A-10 battle.
