Final Stats
COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell to nationally ranked Ohio State, 13-6, on Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Buckeyes were ranked 20th in this week's Inside Lacrosse poll and are 6-2 on the season. The loss drops the Brown and White to 1-4 on the season.
Senior Brenna Houghton tallied half of the team's six goals and in the process became just the fourth player in program history to accumulate 150 career points. Houghton now has 61 career goals and is second all-time with 92 assists. She has a point in 22 consecutive games, dating back to the beginning of last season.
The other big story in the game was the play of senior Eboni Preston in cage. Preston turned away a season-high 17 shots in the loss, including 10 in the second half to help the Bonnies to an even 4-4 score in the final frame.
Ohio State jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead as it held the Bonnies scoreless for the opening 19 minutes.
St. Bonaventure's first goal came at the 10:56 mark as Houghton notched her 10th tally of the season off of a pass from classmate Kimberly Ross.
The Buckeyes added to their lead in the final 10 minutes of the opening frame, outscoring the visitors 4-1 to take a 9-2 lead into the locker room.
After an OSU goal to open the second half, Houghton and sophomore Patty Nessle notched the team's first back-to-back scores of the game to make it 10-4. Houghton's second goal of the contest came on a free position shot, while Nessle's was also unassisted.
Ohio State took its largest lead of the game, 13-4, midway through the final frame, but that would be all Preston and the Bona defense would let the Buckeyes have the rest of the way.
Nessle and Houghton struck, again, for the team's final two goals for the final 13-6 outcome. The two combined for the first score as Houghton found Nessle with a crisp pass. Houghton polished off her sixth career hat trick off an assist from sophomore Molly Hastrich.
After having its first two home games cancelled and moved, St. Bonaventure will attempt to host Oregon on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Stay tuned to GoBonnies.com for any updates on location and game time changes, if necessary.
