Men's soccer holds on to defeat La Salle, 2-1

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Junior Fabrizio Savarino's goal in the 53rd minute pushed the Bonnies to 2-0 and kept St. Bonaventure men's soccer ahead in its 2-1 victory against La Salle on windy Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

Junior Brett Allen sent the ball to senior Sam Maheu who tapped to Savarino on a shot that went past the outstretched hands of La Salle keeper Kyle Quigley into the left side of the net. Savarino's goal is his fourth on the season and his third career conference goal.

The win is the first against La Salle since 2002 when the Bonnies won 3-1. The Brown and White now improves to 5-5 on the season, and splits its opening A-10 weekend going 1-1. La Salle falls to 4-6-2, 0-1-1 in the A-10.

"I'm happy for the team for getting in the conference win column. Friday's loss was difficult yet we were able to regroup and turn things around," said head coach Mel Mahler. "I'm please with our effort to stay focused throughout the match."

Senior Phil Corbi put St. Bonaventure on the board at the 43:10 mark off of a corner kick from Brett Allen to go into halftime, 1-0.

La Salle sent a goal past Flynn in the 55th minute of the match, but could not muster another offensive attack to match the Bonnies' two goals.

St. Bonaventure dominated the Explorers' side of the field edging them in shots 11-10 and in corner kicks 7-3. Junior keeper David Flynn picked up four saves in the victory.

The Bonnies return to Atlantic 10 play when it hosts Dayton on Friday as part of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader at McGraw-Jennings field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. The St. Bonaventure women's team hosts the Flyers at 1:00 p.m.

"I'm encouraged with our ability to continue to create scoring chances. It wasn't the weekend we hoped for, but I'm happy to get the win and the three points. I think we grew as a team these past three days and we're anxious for next weekend's matches versus Dayton and Xavier," said Mahler.
