Bonnies use strong second half to push past Mansfield, 71-18

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team streamlined to a 71-18 victory against Mansfield in an exhibition contest at the Reilly Center on Friday night.

The Brown and White used a 13-0 run to start the game and never looked back cruising to a 53 point victory.

“That was a good starting spot for us. We've emphasized defense, and I really thought we stuck to our fundamentals pretty well,” said head coach Jim Crowley. “We really put an exaggeration on staying disciplined, not forcing things, defending against a team, and I thought, for the most part, we did that pretty well.”

The Bonnies jumped right out of the gate against the Mountaineers with scores by preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team selection Dana Mitchell and redshirt sophomore Armelia Horton. A lay up by freshman Chelsea Bowker put the Brown and White up 13-0 with 13:53 remaining in the 1st half.

St. Bonaventure went up by 19 on a Megan Van Tatenhove jumper with 6:18 left in the first stanza to push the lead 23-4. Sophomore Jessica Jenkins knocked in her second 3-pointer to put the Bonnies ahead by 26 points, leading Mansfield 30-4.

The Mountaineers would score four free points in a minute and a half courtesy of a three-pointer from Tegan Atallah and one from Meredith Hafer to close out the first half, 33-11.

The Bonnies came out in the second half on another 13-0 run courtesy of Mitchell, whose pair of charity stripe points and a trio of lay ups set the score at 46-11 with 16:17 remaining in the second.

Mitchell led the way for the Bonnies dropping in 17 while Van Tatenhove added 12. Junior Cara Gustafson pulled down a team-high six rebounds. The rookies, Bowker, Colleen Kiss, Cyndra Couch and Alaina Walker added in 21 points as a group.

Atallah paced the Mountaineers with a team-high eight points, while Mallory Moore chipped in four points and four rebounds.

“Offensively, we're still a work in progress. We got some stuff out of transition, but we might not be able to do that as the games continue on, so we've got to get better in our half-court set and understand the shots we're going to get,” said Crowley.“There are certainly some things we want to get better at, but I think we were able to see some things we've done well to really help us be successful.”

The Bonnies open regular season play away from the Reilly Center against Binghamton on Friday, Nov. 13 7 p.m. tipoff.
