NEWARK, Del. -
The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to end on Saturday afternoon after dropping a 12-8 decision to Delaware at Fred P. Rullo Jr. Stadium.
The loss is the Brown and White's first in the month of March, as they fall to 3-3 on the season. Delaware, on the other hand, has now won three games in a row to even its record up at 3-3.
Leading the way for the Bonnies on the offensive end was sophomore Christine Hanley and junior Molly Hastrich, who scored three goals apiece in the loss.
Nine different Blue Hens found the net in the game, led by sophomore midfielder Ali Libertini who scored three goals on three shots on goal. The only other Delaware player to score more than one goal on the day was junior midfielder Emily Schaknowski who tallied two goals on an incredible 11 shots on goal.
Tori Waheibi started in goal for St. Bonaventure, making 12 saves and allowing nine goals to pick up the loss. Victoria Morgan came in for the second half of play and recorded nine saves while allowing just three goals.
Delaware won nearly every statistical category, as the Blue Hens out-shot the Brown and White 36-20, won the groundball battle 28-15 and won 16 draw controls to the Bonnies seven.
Both teams came out cold to start the game, as neither side scored a goal for the first 13 minutes of the contest. Hanley opened the scoring on a free-position shot with 16:09 left in the first to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead.
That would be St. Bonaventure's only lead of the game, however, as the Blue Hens scored the next three goals of the contest. Sophomore Holly Burman scored the last of the three goals on a free-position shot to make the score 3-1 Delaware with 8:49 remaining in the first half.
Hastrich would bring the Brown and White back within one, 3-2, after she converted another free-position shot with 8:15 left in the first.
That would be as close as St. Bonaventure would come to the Blue Hens for the remainder of the game. Right after Hastrich's goal, Delaware ripped off six-straight goals over the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 9-2 lead into intermission.
The Bonnies would out-score Delaware 6-3 in the second half, but never got within four goals of the Blue Hens the rest of the way.
Senior Jessica Cerveny got the start in net for Delaware and played the entire game, making eight saves in the win.
The Brown and White will look to return to their winning ways when they welcome Little 3 rival Niagara to McGraw Jennings Field on Tuesday, March 24, for a 4:00 p.m. game.
