The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team scored seven of the games first eight goals to pick up its first win of the 2009 season with a 22-8 victory over Presbyterian on Thursday afternoon in St. Petersburg, Fla.
St. Bonaventure improves to 1-2 on the young season after the its dominant performance, while Presbyterian falls to 1-3 with the loss.
Leading the way for the Brown and White offensively were sophomore Christine Hanley and freshman Danielle Drabin, both of whom scored four goals apiece in the victory. Junior Molly Hastrich continued her strong play as, tallying her third straight game with at least four points, scoring three goals and handing out an assist.
Getting her third straight start in net for the Brown and White was junior Tori Waheibi. Waheibi earned 25:13 of action allowing four goals while making four saves to pick up the win.
The Bonnies led in just about every major statistical category. They out-shot the Blue Hose 39-13 for the game, including a 35-9 edge in shots on goal. St. Bonaventure held the edge in draw controls 20-12 and also converted 6-of-9 free-position shots for the game.
The Brown and White started the game by scoring seven goals over the first 11 minutes of the contest. The Bonnies would receive an unassisted goal by Hastrich to put them up 7-1 with 14:51 remaining in the first stanza.
Presbyterian would cut the lead down to just six after a goal by junior Jordan Newberry would make the score 10-4 St. Bonaventure, with 4:47 left in the half.
That would be as close as the Blue Hose would get, however, as the Brown and White exploded offensively, scoring the next seven goals of the game. An unassisted tally by Hanley would put the game out of reach, making the score 17-4 St. Bonaventure with just 22:47 left in the game.
Leading the way for Presbyterian was junior Brittni Dulaney who scored a team-high three goals on just four shots. Newberry was the only other Blue Hose player with multiple goals, tallying two scores on the day while winning a team-high six draw controls.
Freshman Susan England got the start in net for Presbyterian and played the entire 60 minutes making 13 saves while taking the loss.
The Bonnies will make their way back to New York to take on fellow Empire State foe Binghamton on Tuesday, March 10. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. as the Brown and White look to make it two wins in a row.
