WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The St. Bonaventure softball team swept both games of its Atlantic 10 doubleheader against George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
The Bonnies picked up a 2-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader, and followed that up with a 9-6 triumph in the nightcap.
With the pair of wins, the Brown and White improve to 10-26 overall and 7-9 in the A-10. The doubleheader sweep today by the Bonnies also keeps them in contention for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, as they are now two games back of Temple for the sixth seed.
Junior Sherri Thompson got the start in the first game of the doubleheader, out-pitching GW starter Amanda Gabriel, and threw a complete game allowing just one run while striking out seven.
The Bonnies gave Thompson all the run support she would need in the top of the first. After sophomore Shelly Seeger singled to left center, freshman Brooke Frey hit a two-run homerun to put the Brown and White up 2-0.
Thompson would take care of the rest from that point forward. George Washington would attempt to rally in the sixth inning when sophomore Katie Terrazas smacked a solo home run to right field to make the score 2-1. The Ulysses, Pa. native would get out of the sixth and retire the side in order in the seventh to seal up the win.
The second game of the day would be a slug fest featuring 15 runs and 25 hits combined between the two teams. Thompson got the start once again in game two, but was not nearly as effective as she was in game one.
Thompson went three innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned. Freshman Erin Nargi came in to relieve Thompson, but allowed the Colonials expanded their lead up to 6-3 against Nargi thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI double by junior Amanda Gabriel.
Sophomore Sarah Signore came in to relieve Nargi and steadied the ship for the Bonnies, allowing no runs over two and two thirds innings of work. The Brown and White would begin their comeback in support of Signore in the sixth inning. After a two RBI single by Seeger, Frey would come through again with a two RBI double to put the Bonnies up at 7-6.
St. Bonaventure would add two more insurance runs in the seventh inning with a clutch hit and some shaky Colonial defense. After a double by freshman Ashley Nowak junior Stephanie Narde singled her home to make the score 8-6. The Bonnies would add an insurance run when senior Amanda Kotz scored on an error on the George Washington pitcher to make the score 9-6.
Seeger and Frey were by far the two catalysts of the St. Bonaventure offense all day long. Seeger was 5-for-9 with two runs scored and four runs driven in, while Frey was 5-for-7 with two runs scored and four RBI's.
The Brown and White will be back in action on Tuesday, April 28, when they play a doubleheader against Big 4 rival Buffalo. The first game of the series is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
