Box Score
BRONX, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure softball
team's Atlantic 10 Softball Championship got off to a rough start,
as it dropped its first round matchup against Saint Louis 10-0 in
six innings on Wednesday afternoon at Fordham University's Bahoshy
Field.
Due to their first round loss the Bonnies will now face
fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's, who lost its first round game earlier
in the day against host Fordham, in an elimination game on
Wednesday afternoon at 5:25 pm.
The Brown and White fall to 12-27 on the season after the
defeat, while Saint Louis improves its overall mark to 22-31.
Saint Louis erupted for five runs in the third inning off St.
Bonaventure starter Sherri Thompson,
which was more than enough run support for SLU starter Kelcie
Matesa. Matesa held the Bonnies offense to just one hit for the
game, while striking out six.
The Billikens scored their first run of the game in the second
inning. Freshman Erin Cejka smacked a double to deep center field
to get into scoring position with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt
moved Cejka over to third, fellow freshman Kelly Flanagan hit a
sacrifice fly to left field to drive her in to make the score 1-0
SLU.
Saint Louis would put the game out of reach in the third,
exploding for five runs in the frame. A walk and an infield single
by the first two Billiken batters would put runners on first and
second with nobody out. Senior Rachel Heet stepped up and took
advantage by driving a double into the right center field gap to
make the score 2-0 in favor of Saint Louis. After an error by
second baseman Andrea Swanger
allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate to make the score 4-0,
senior Katie Johns crushed a two-run homerun to make the score 6-0.
The third-seeded Billikens would add on four more runs in the
sixth inning thanks to an RBI double and a three-run home run by
sophomore Caitlin Trevillyan to stretch their advantage up to 10-0
and cap the scoring for the game.
Thompson ended up pitching five innings in the contest, allowing
six earned runs on four hits to take the loss.
St. Bonaventure managed only two base runners for the game off
Matesa. Senior Kathryn Pazda hit a
single up the middle in the second inning and classmate Andrea Swanger
drew a walk in the fourth.
