The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team dropped their season
opener, 3-0 against Cleveland State on its home turf on Monday.
"We lost to a good opponent. Unfortunately, we were not able to
match Cleveland State's aggressiveness and determination for the
whole 90 minutes," said head coach Mel Mahler "We played well in
spurts and had chances to get back in the game."
Cleveland State dominated on the offense outshooting the Bonnies
25-9 with 13 of the Vikings' shots coming in the first half.
The Vikings opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Josh
Williams took advantage of a free kick from Slavisa Ubiparipovic.
Williams took a breakaway shot to get the best of keeper David
Flynn to give put the Vikings on the board.
Cleveland State was not done as it scored two more goals in the
second half. The first coming from Mitch Boyer off a penalty kick
in the 63rd minute to put the Vikings up 2-0.
The home team struck again with four minutes left in the game as
Admir Suljevic slid the ball up the right side to Ubiparipovic
passing to Aaron Adkins who secured the goal past Flynn.
For the Bonnies, Sam Maheu led on the attack with four shots;
Brett Allen tallied another two and Joe Miller, Fabrizio Savarino
and Tyler Bellamy each tallying one. Despite the three goals, Flynn
made 11 saves.
"We'll bounce back we have the experience to regroup and raise
our level of intensity," said Mahler. "We'll be anxious to get back
on the field on Thursday and put on a better showing."
St. Bonaventure welcomes Wright State at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday,
Sept. 3 at McGraw-Jennings Field.
