Despite having a season-high 17 shots, the St. Bonaventure
women's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net as it fell to
Colgate, 2-0, under the lights on Friday evening at Van Doren
Field.
It marks the second straight game the Bonnies have been shutout
and drops their record to 3-5 with one more non-conference game
remaining on Sunday at Pittsburgh. The Raiders improve to 2-4-1
with the win.
"We played okay and generated a lot of shots and created some
chances, but the difference today was Colgate finished their
chances and we didn't," said head coach Manoj Khettry. "We weren't
sharp enough when we needed to be and Colgate was. That's the
difference when you play good teams. I wish I could come up with
something more meaningful to explain the game especially because we
did some good things but not enough to get a result. I do believe
we can bounce back on Sunday and can end the non-conference on a
positive note with a good performance."
Nine of St. Bonaventure 10 starters in the field finished with
at least one shot, led by sophomore Janelle Taylor's four. The
Bonnies held a 17-14 edge in shots and put five on goal, but were
unable to beat Colgate keeper Ashley Walsh who made five saves.
The Bonnies seemed to have momentum in their favor early on, as
they reeled off four shots and had two corner kicks in the opening
19 minutes.
Colgate put an end to that momentum in the 21st minute when
Jillian Arnault tallied her second goal of the season to put the
home team up 1-0.
The Brown and White continued to apply pressure over the final
24 minutes of the half, getting off six more shots. Unfortunately,
none of the shots found the back of the net, as the Bonnies went
into the locker room trailing 1-0 despite holding a 10-6 shot
advantage.
The second half started much like the opening 45 minutes did
with St. Bonaventure applying most of the pressure. The Bonnies
fired three shots and had a corner kick over the first 15 minutes,
but another Colgate goal in the 61st minute broke the momentum once
again and gave the Raiders a 2-0 edge.
This time, St. Bonaventure struggled to rebound from the goal,
getting off just five shots over the next 30 minutes compared to 13
over the first 60.
Freshman Kathryn Kerkman made her fourth straight start in net,
making three saves in the loss.
St. Bonaventure closeout the non-conference portion of its
schedule on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it visits Big East foe
Pittsburgh.
