A quick goal in the first half and strong defensive play
throughout the game proved to be the difference makers against
Saint Louis as the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team shutout the
Billikens 1-0 at McGraw-Jennings Field on Sunday afternoon.
The win puts the Bonnies on a two-game winning streak into A-10
play. The Brown and White now stand at 5-6 (2-0) on the season,
while Saint Louis slips to 3-5-2 (0-1-1) after having its
three-game unbeaten streak halted.
"First of all, Saint Louis is very good team. We were fortunate
to get some lucky bounces and a few good posts," said head coach
Manoj Khettry. Nicole Markert's save on a penalty kick was
unbelievable, but I'm really proud of how hard we played for 90
minutes; to beat a team of Saint Louis' caliber isn't easy and you
have to get effort from every player and we did that today. It's
fantastic to get another shutout and to win another game."
In the second minute, Saint Louis was called for a hand ball and
that was all the Bonnies' needed to get on the board. Sophomore
Kaitlin Krisko converted the free kick from classmate Janelle
Taylor to see the back of the net in her first goal of the season.
Saint Louis' best chance came from a penalty kick from Julia
Bradenberg in the 76th minute, but keeper Nicole Markert blocked
the ball shutting down the scoring chance.
In the final minutes of the game, Markert again made a great
save as a shot from Saint Louis' Kelly Waeckerle deflected off the
post into perfect scoring position, but the Bonnies kept their
composure and blanked the attack.
Junior goalkeeper Markert picked up her seventh career shutout,
notching three saves. The Billikens edged the Bonnies in shots
10-2, with six coming in the second half. They also led in corner
kicks 7-2.
The Brown and White's goal is the second against Saint Louis
since it joined the conference in 2005, the first came in last
season's A-10 tournament when the Billikens knocked the Bonnies
out, 2-1. In its three meetings, St. Bonaventure had been
out-scored 6-1.
St. Bonaventure looks to build of its first 2-0 start A-10 play
since on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Duquesne. The Bonnies face
Duquesne for a 1 p.m. kick off at McGraw-Jennings Field.
