ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Behind six
goals, including five in the second half, from Mary Flowers,
Richmond downed the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team 18-9 in
its final game of the season on a cold Sunday afternoon at
McGraw-Jennings Field.
The Bonnies end the season on a four-game skid and finish 7-9
overall and 2-5 in Atlantic 10 action while Richmond improves to
9-8 overall and 6-1 in conference play and will be the top seed for
the Atlantic 10 Championship next week.
Junior Christine
Hanley paced the Bonnies with five goals, including
three out of the Brown and White's four second half goals.
Hanley also added two assists on the game while going 3-for-3 in
free position shots.
Senior Molly
Hastrich had the other second half goal to bring her
total to two for the game while Samantha
Cavallaro and Daisy
Timlin each added one. Senior Tori
Waheibi grabbed seven saves in the loss.
Richmond held a 34-24 advantage on shots and 25-23 in ground
balls. St. Bonaventure had 17 draw controls to the Spiders'
10, but was plagued by turnovers tallying 22 to Richmond's eight.
Richmond jumped on the board first just 19 second into the game,
but Timlin and Cavallaro answered with goals just 22 seconds apart
to lead 2-1 at 27:01. The Spiders did not stay down for long,
starting a 5-1 run that lasted from the 22:52 mark through 6:19 of
the first frame. Spider Gabi Weigan scored three consecutive
goals during the stretch and Hanley added the first of her five.
Hanley scored her second goal at 5:45 before both teams went on
a scoring draught. Hastrich ended the standstill with 49
seconds remaining to bring the Bonnies within one, 6-5.
Richmond answered back six seconds later with a goal from Flowers
to give the Spiders a 7-5 halftime lead.
Richmond opened the second half on a 3-0 run before Hastrich
netted her second goal of the game to stop the tear and make it
10-6. The Spiders continued to dominate the offensive end,
holding an eight goal advantage, 16-8, with 5:32 remaining in the
half.
Hanley scored her fifth and final goal of the game with less
than five minutes to play, but Richmond added two more insurance
goals to end the game.
Flowers led Richmond with six goals while Weigand and Danielle
Schaevitz added four and three goals respectively.
Prior to the game, St. Bonaventure honored its four seniors
– Molly Hastrich, Ashley Fischer,
Sarah
Gagnon and Tori Waheibi.
