ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Canisius' two
multi-run home runs pushed the Golden Griffins past the Bonnies, as
the St. Bonaventure softball team fell in both games of their
doubleheader 6-4 and 7-3, respectively on a clear Wednesday
afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
St. Bonaventure falls to 8-21 on the season while Big 4 rival
Canisius improves to 24-14. Now on a four-game skid, the Bonnies
look to rebound as they travel to Dayton this weekend. The
A-10 doubleheader is set for Saturday, beginning at noon.
The Griffs jumped on the board first with a three-run first
inning. The Bonnies countered with a run of their own on when
senior Stephanie Narde
scored on junior Kara
Morenus' double to left field. Griffs' pitcher
Caroline Main struck out the last batter to end the threat.
In the second inning, junior Maureen
Wells reached base on a fielder's choice while
sophomore Katie
Taylor got to first on an error, advancing Wells to
third. With only one out, Kristin
Sullivan jetted down the first base line to outrun the
throw from the pitcher and score Wells. Sullivan stole second
before a strikeout and then with two outs, Narde hit a single to
right field to plate both Taylor and Sullivan, giving the Bonnies a
4-3 advantage.
Sophomore Erin Nargi
held Canisius scoreless through the sixth inning until Canisius'
Lizzy Gatto hit a three-run long shot to come from behind in the
seventh and take the game. St. Bonaventure loaded the bases
in the final frame, but was unable to convert as Main picked up the
win.
Game two began the same way as the first with the Griffs scoring
first, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the first. The Bonnies
responded as the first two batters walked and Morenus hit a single
to the left side to load the bases. Freshman Hali
Enderby then took a good luck and picked up a walk for
an RBI, giving the Bonnies a 2-1 lead.
Both teams put zeroes up for two innings before the inning's
leadoff batter, Paige Freiberger, hit a solo home run to tie the
score. A Canisius walk sandwiched between two outs seemed to
give the Griffs the chance to pull ahead, but the Bonnies ended the
threat as Brooke
Frey picked off Canisius' runner to end the inning.
Freshman Danielle
Frye opened the fourth inning with a single to
shortstop followed by Sullivan's single, advancing Whitney
Schlimm, who pinch ran for Frye, to third.
Freshman Jessenia
Andujar hit a short ball to the short stop, who
hesitated to throw to home, and Schlimm slid in for the run, giving
the Bonnies a 3-2 advantage.
However, the lead was short lived, as Michelle Fridey hit a
two-run homer in the second spot of the sixth inning. That was all
of the momentum Canisius needed as they plated one more in the
sixth and added two insurance runs in the seventh.
Thompson went eight innings through the two games, giving up
nine hits and eight runs while striking out nine. Nargi
pitched six innings in game one allowing six hits and five runs and
tossed three strike outs.
Sullivan picked up her first multi-hit games of the season,
going 5-of-6 with one RBI and one run.
