WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — St. Bonaventure
junior Tori
Burchett gave the Bonnies a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the
match, but host Purdue (2-1-1) tied the game in the 19th
minute and rallied for three goals in a 4:42 span to take a 4-1
comeback win over the Bonnies (1-2-0) Sunday afternoon at Purdue's
Varsity Soccer Complex.
Burchett scored her first goal of the season just after the
opening whistle, after intercepting a pass in the Boilermakers'
defensive backfield.
"Our forwards did a great job of making the play predictable,"
said Bonnies head coach Manoj Khettry. "They went to switch a ball
in the back and Tori intercepted it about about 40 yards from
goal." After dribbling alone to just inside the box, Burchett
ripped a shot low and hard into the left side with her left foot to
give St. Bonaventure an early cushion.
"I don't think you could have asked for a better start against a
Big Ten team on the road," Khettry added.
Purdue got the equalizer in the 19th minute when a shot from
junior Lauren Montenegro was deflected and bounced over keeper
Kathryn Kerman's head for Montenegro's second goal of the young
season.
The Bonnies and Boilermakers remained knotted at 1-1 until the
41st minute and the first of a three-goal outburst from the hosts.
A long cross from Roya Akhavain found its way to Rachael Kimack,
who finished the play by depositing the ball into the lower left
corner. Two minutes and 31 seconds later, freshman Shae Desmond
tallied her first collegiate goal when she ripped a shot from 30
yards out. Purdue concluded its scoring just 40 second into the
second half when Kellie Phillips one-timed a cross from Jessica
Warren into the back of the net.
"The game was lost in a five-minute span," Khettry said. "We
just lost our concentration and we were tired as this was the first
time this year we've played two games in a weekend. I thought we
played good soccer against a quality opponent, and unfortunately we
were just punished for the mistakes we made."
Despite the results this weekend, Khettry believes his team can
mold into a contender. "We have the potential to be a very good
team. We just have to continue to believe in our style, play
possession soccer and be willing to work harder for each other
defensively."
The Bonnies return to action Friday against the University at
Buffalo. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
Notes: The Bonnies' goal was the fastest ever
scored by an opposing team against Purdue; the previous record was
45 seconds. … There were three yellow cards issued: one
against St. Bonaventure and two against Purdue.
