Lacrosse Opens 2011 With Win at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Cara Callahan and senior Christine Hanley each scored four goals and Emily Kane dished out three assists to lead the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse to a 14-10 season-opening victory over Bucknell Sunday afternoon at Graham Field.

Callahan scored the game's first goal in her first collegiate action to give the Bonnies (1-0) an early lead over the Bison (0-1). Bucknell scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart to take the lead before SBU responded with seven unassisted scores over a 10-minute span to take control for good.

"The Bucknell win was a great way to start off our 2011 season," commented head coach CHristy Malone. "We showed great composure and focus during the game. I thought it was a team effort all around. Hopefully we can build off of this win and carry the momentum over to Ohio State."

Bucknell's Ali Carey, who scored a game-high five goals, found the back of the net three times over the final 5:04 of the first period, as the Bison pulled to within two, 9-7, at the half.

To open the final period, Kane found Hanley and Amanda Cizenski for tallies, before Danielle Drabin and Erin Thomas went to goal alone to put the Bonnies up 13-7 with 18:30 left. Cizenski (four) and senior captain Jill Remick (three) combined to cause seven turnovers, with Remick scooping up a game-best five ground balls.

Assistant coach Marcus Nelson also praised the Bonnies after the win. "I was pleased with our performance and how we battled on the field with Bucknell. Our team is taking steps in the right direction as we prepare for our game against Ohio State."

Freshman Karly Kocis made nine second-half saves to preserve the victory in net, while classmate Sara Schlagenhauf earned the start and was credited with the win (1-0).

The Bonnies return to action Feb. 27 at Ohio State.
