Siena Sneaks Past St. Bonaventure in Bonnies Home Opener

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (1-2) controlled the pace of play for much of the game, but couldn't overcome a Siena (1-0) goal in the 25th minute of a 1-0 loss Friday evening at McGraw-Jennings Field.

Siena senior forward Ashleigh Barone finished her run on a ball sent in from the right side with a touch that crossed the mouth of the goal and into the net for the game's lone score midway through the first half.

Last year, Barone's tally in the 12th minute off a rebound in front proved the difference in another 1-0 game as Siena snapped the Bonnies' five-game win streak en route to the Saints' first NCAA Women's College Cup berth.

The Bonnies outshot the reigning MAAC champions 23-7 and had nine shots on goal in a sustained offensive push, but came up short on several chances down the stretch in an effort to find the equalizer.

Senior Tori Burchett nearly evened the score in the 84th minute off a rebound in the box, but Saint keeper Laura Ettinger made one of her nine saves to help send Siena to its 16th consecutive non-conference victory.

The Bonnies return to McGraw Jennings Field on Sunday to host Binghamton, a squad SBU have not faced since a 3-2 loss Aug. 29, 2004.

NOTES: The contest was the back end of a doubleheader with the men's team, fell to Buffalo 3-0 … Siena opened its season Aug. 19, but the game was called after just 23 minutes due to lightning and was ruled a no-contest … Director of Sales and Marketing Aaron Hill and Ticket Office Manager Michelle Scannell served as the on-site administrators … Faculty Athletics Representative Denny Wilkins also graced the sidelines … Sienna donned all green, with the Bonnies wearing white tops and black shorts.
