JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Jen Sansano threw a complete-game no-hitter to power the St. Bonaventure softball team (7-6) to a split in a pair of games at the Osprey Invitational hosted by North Florida.
Sansano struck out four across seven innings, guiding the Bonnies to a 6-0 whitewash over Mount St. Mary's to end the day. McNeese State earned a 2-0 win over SBU in the opener.
The leadoff runner reached base in three of the first four innings, but Sansano and the Bona defense held steady, negating a two-on, one-out threat in the second with a 5-3 double play.
The right-hander from East Amherst, N.Y. surrendered three walks in the game, including the leadoff batter in the fourth, in what would prove to be the Mount's best scoring chance.
After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner over, an infield error put runners on the corners. With just one away and two in scoring position after a stolen base, Sansano settled in, striking out her first batter of the game and inducing a infield popup to end the threat.
Sansano spun three perfect innings to close it out, with the game's final out being another popup to second baseman Brittany Storch.
Senior catcher Brooke Frey called the game from behind the plate and blasted a two-RBI double to left in the top of the third for the first runs of the game. Ashley Nowak brought Grace Rooney in to score in the seventh, before Lindsay Stowell's two-bagger pushed two more home. Junior Jessenia Andujar singled to right to give the Bonnies the final margin.
St. Bonaventure's Diana Phalon allowed just one earned run and struck out three in the 2-0 loss to McNeese State in the first game of the day.
The Bonnies continue the Osprey Invitational tomorrow with games against Delaware State and host North Florida.
