Women's Tennis Season Ends In A-10 Championship First Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The St. Bonaventure women's tennis team had its season come to a close on Thursday as the 12th-seeded Bonnies fell to 5th-seeded Xavier, 4-0, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship at Boar's Head Sports Club.

Bonaventure concludes its season with an 11-9 record following the setback to the Musketeers, who advance to Friday's quarterfinal round to face 4th-seeded Temple.

The loss also concludes the career of senior Manuela Marin Salcedo, a two-time A-10 All-Conference member. Marin Salcedo dropped her final singles match, 6-3, 6-0, and her doubles match with partner Fatya Amiri, 8-3. The Florida native finishes her final campaign in the Brown and White with a 23-17 overall record, including a team-high-tying 14 doubles victories with Amiri.

Xavier started the match by winning at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles (order of finish) to claim the doubles point. The Musketeers then continued their dominance with straight-set victories at No. 6, No. 5 and No. 1 singles (order of finish) to cap off the 4-0 shutout.

St. Bona was without the services of junior Amanda Pallikunnell – one half of the team's No. 1 doubles duo – as she tore her ACL in the club's regular-season finale last week against Niagara.

Matches are typically played in a best-of-seven format, with the team which records four points being rewarded with the win. In championship play, once a team reaches four points, all the remaining matches being played are halted.

Head coach Mike Bates loses just Marin Salcedo to graduation, and is expected to return six players, led by freshman Amiri, who paced SBU with a team-best 27 wins this campaign.
