Women's Tennis Opens Season at Navy Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The St. Bonaventure women's tennis team is set to open its fall season at Navy's Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational. The three-day tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.

In addition to the Bonnies and host Midshipmen, the 10-team field includes George Mason, Howard, Loyola (Md.), Manhattan, Monmouth, Nova Southeastern, Seton Hall and Towson. Individual players and doubles teams will be competing for records and flight championships. No team records will be kept.

Doubles play starts on Friday and concludes on Saturday, while singles action starts on Saturday and wraps up on Sunday. Play is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday

St. Bonaventure begins the year hoping to build on a successful 2011-12 campaign that resulted in an 11-9 team record under longtime coach Michael Bates. The Bonnies return five letterwinners from that team.

Among the most accomplished returning players is sophomore Fatya Amiri, who registered a team-best 27 singles and doubles victories in her first collegiate season. The Oakland, Calif. native recorded a 13-6 singles record, with a 2-3 mark playing out of the first position and an 11-3 record at No. 2.  In doubles play, she had a 14-6 mark playing out of the first and second positions.

St. Bonaventure will also depend on the experienced trio of seniors Amanda Pallikunnel (pictured) and Kathryn Kvas and sophomore Marissa Brossard. Each of the three accounted for 10 singles victories apiece last season, as Pallikunnel and Kvas each went 10-9 and Brossard went 10-6. Pallikunnel and Brossard also partnered for eight victories at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Riley Archer – who picked up two singles wins and three doubles triumphs last year – and freshman Taylor Cole round out the Bonnies' lineup.

St. Bonaventure will host the SBU Fall Classic Oct. 12-14 following the Navy Invite.
