ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure softball team (3-19) dropped both games of their conference slate opening double-header at Butler on Friday afternoon. Both games were ultimately decided by the long ball.
In the first game of the day, the pitchers dueled to a 0-0 draw through three innings. In the fourth, Jessenia Andujar lead off for the Brown and White and singled to the left side. Grace Rooney ultimately drove home the go-ahead run.
Carly Bilchak continued to toss a gem, holding the held the Bulldogs scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. With one out and a runner on first, Butler homered down the left field line to give it a 2-1 victory.
Bilchak tossed 6.1 innings of two-run ball striking out just one and allowing only six hits. The Bonnies offense just wasn't able to push across any insurance for Bilchak who falls to 2-6 on the season.
In the second tilt, it was the Bonnies jumping into the lead once again. Emily McDonough lead off the game with a bunt single and came around to score for the only run of first.
Alexis Sloat now in the circle for the Bonnies held Butler scoreless through four. In the fifth, a grand slam and five total runs put the Brown and White in a 5-1 hole.
In the sixth, the Bonnies stormed back, scoring twice thanks to runs batted in by Christine Watson and Emily McDonough.
Leading 5-3, Butler tacked on an insurance run in the sixth then held off the Brown and White to claim the 6-3 victory.
St. Bonaventure has very little time to reflect on Friday's losses as head south right away for a double-header at Saint Louis on Saturday (Mar. 22). Those games are set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
