Women's Tennis Season Ends With Loss To Xavier In A-10 Tourney

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – St. Bonaventure saw its season come to an end on Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to Xavier in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship at Boar's Head Sports Club.

The lone victory for the 15th-seeded Bonnies (3-17) came from sophomore Marisa Brossard (pictured), who was leading against Kelly Alkire, 6-2, 3-1, when their second singles match was called.

The second-seeded Musketeers (18-5) advance to face the winner of No. 7 Fordham vs. No. 10 Duquesne, scheduled for later Thursday, in a quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. Friday.

This marks the third straight year St. Bonaventure has been ousted from the conference tournament in the first round by Xavier. The Musketeers also topped the Bonnies by 4-0 scores the previous two years.

Thursday's meeting was also a rematch of the regular season finale for both teams, won by Xavier, 6-1, on Saturday at the SBU Fitness Center. Brossard, who completes her sophomore campaign with a three-match winning streak and a team-best 14-13 record, was also the lone Bonnies winner in that competition.

In completed singles matches on Thursday, St. Bonaventure's top singles player, sophomore Fatya Amiri, was bested, 6-1, 6-1, by Alexandra Brinker, while freshman Taylor Cole and senior Riley Archer each suffered 6-0, 6-1 defeats in the fourth and fifth matches, respectively. No. 3 player, senior Kathryn Kvas, and No. 6, freshman Jillian Hammell, both dropped their first sets before their matches were called in the second set.

SBU's top doubles duo of Brossard and Amiri was trailing 7-1 when its match was called, while Kvas and Cole fell, 8-4, and Archer and Hammell were shutout, 8-0, in the second and third matches.
