Box Score

Final Score: St. Bonaventure 1, Kent State 0
Records: St. Bonaventure 1-1  |  Kent State 1-1
Location:
Parkway Field (Bradford, Pa.)

The Short Story:
Freshman Danielle Vis scored in the first half and St. Bonaventure made that goal stand up as the Bonnies earned a hard-fought, 1-0 win over Kent State on Sunday afternoon.

In the 13th minute, Vis received a crossing pass from Abby Maiello and beat Kent State keeper Stephanie Senn with a high shot to Senn's right.

The Golden Flashes applied steady pressure throughout the game, especially in the second half, but the Bonnies held firm behind junior keeper Christina Sarokon, who made four saves. Kent State held an 11-6 edge in shots, including 7-2 in the second half.

The win evened the Bonnies' record at 1-1. Kent State, the preseason favorite to win the Mid-America Conference East division, fell to 1-1.

Inside The Stats / Game Notes:

  • While Sarokon had four saves, she thwarted numerous other Kent State crossing passes with decisive stops.
  • Vis, a heralded rookie from Milton, Ontario, got her first career goal, and first of the season for the Bonnies, with help from veteran teammates. Maiello set up the goal by beating several Kent defenders and threading a pass to her left that appeared headed for junior Lauren Hill. However, Hill allowed the ball through and it wound up going to an open Vis.
  • Kent State had 11 corner kicks to only one for St. Bonaventure.
  • St. Bonaventure coach Steve Brdarski's club played without senior forward Molly Curry, who sat out due to a leg injury. Curry scored eight goals last season and was a second team All-Atlantic 10 selection.
  • The win was the first ever for St. Bonaventure against Kent State; the Golden Flashes had won all five of the prior meetings in the series.

Next Up: The Bonnies will host Niagara on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. It will be the first game played the newly-renovated McGraw-Jennings Field. The first 100 fans will receive a team photo and schedule card.
