The Short Story: St. Bonaventure battled undefeated Temple in a close game but wound up on the short end of a 1-0 decision Friday afternoon in the first round of the Big Red Shootout at Cornell University.
The Owls dominated the game statistically, outshooting the Bonnies 24-5. However, the game remained scoreless until the 55th minute, when Kayla Cunningham took a shot from the right side from about 18 yards. St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Christina Sarokon got her fingertips on the ball, but the rebound caromed toward the far post, where Temple's Paula Jurewicz got to it first and kicked it toward goal. Sarokon swiped it away, but it was ruled over the line by the linesman and Temple took the lead.
St. Bonaventure did create two good chances after the tough call. With 32:57 left, Danielle Vis sent a ball through to Lauren Hill, who sent a shot along the ground past Temple keeper Shauni Kerkhoff that clanked off the far post. Then with 8:35 left, Brittany Charles' corner kick from the left side found Gabrielle Balseca about five yards out on the far post. Balseca headed the ball straight down, and it bounced just over the crossbar.
The Bonnies fell to 2-4-1, while Temple improved to 6-0.
