@BonniesWSoccer Suffers 5-0 Setback in A-10 Opener

The Short Story:

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies fell to the George Mason Patriots, 5-0, at the Marra Athletics Complex in their first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the season. 

George Mason struck first at the 13:28 mark, as an Emma Starr cross on the ground connected with Sarah Hardison, who then kicked it just past the diving Bona keeper.

The Patriots extended their lead to 2-0 at the 34:26 mark as Hardison netted an Erin Mitchell cross for her second goal of the game. The 2-0 lead would hold into the half.

At the 62:18 mark, George Mason went up 3-0 as Jenna Hamilton got a ricochet off her shin past the keeper amidst a scuffle in front of the net.

Mason scored their fourth goal as Alex Myers fired from about 25 yards out and sent it in right down the middle at the 71:06 mark.

The Patriots added one more from Jenna Hamilton to make it 5-0 in the 85th minute.

Inside The Stats/Game Notes:

  • George Mason outshot the Bonnies, 16-10. Mason put 10 on net to the Bonnies' seven.
  • Entering today's game, the Bonnies had not surrendered more that two goals in a single game.
  • This is the first time an opponent has scored at least five goals on the Bonnies since a 5-0 loss at Richmond on Oct. 5, 2014.
  • The last time one team scored five goals at St. Bonaventure came on a Bonnies' 5-0 win against Temple on Oct. 24, 2008.
  • With 10 shots in tonight's game, the Bonnies have now fired 10 or more shots six times this season.
  • SBU sent in eight substitutions, which is the most the team has made in a single game this season.
  • Bonnies' goalkeeper Christina Sarokon saved five shots between the pipes.
  • Both of Abby Maiello's shots went on goal, while Lauren Hill led the team with three shots.
  • Sally Cairns and Tori Bernardo saw their first action of the season in tonight's game.

Up Next: The Bonnies will stay home as they welcome George Washington for their second conference match on Sunday, October 4. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
