Location: Binghamton Athletics Complex – Vestal, N.Y.
The Short Story: St. Bonaventure gave up a pair of second half goals and lost its season opener 2-1 at Binghamton on Friday evening.
Stephanie Jenkins gave the Bonnies the lead with a penalty kick goal past Bearcats goalkeeper Katie Katziyianis in the 21st minute.
The Bonnies maintained their 1-0 advantage into halftime, but three minutes into the second half, a penalty kick was awarded to the Bearcats' Stefanie Church. She made good on the kick to tie the score at 1-1.
Julianna Johnston broke the tie in the 69th minute when she took a pass from Sierra Barr and lofted a shot over Moore from about 25 yards out into the top of the net.
From that point on, Binghamton was able to fall back into a defensive posture and the Bonnies could not assemble any serious scoring chances.
While St. Bonaventure had an 11-5 edge in shots taken, both teams wound up with only three shots on goal.
Inside The Stats / Game Notes:
- Bonnies senior goalkeeper Christina Sarokon was unable to play due a quadriceps injury and so Moore, a sophomore, made her third career start.
- Jenkins' goal was just the second of her career for the senior, who primarily plays on the back line or midfield. Her only other goal came her freshman season.
- Lauren Hill and Abby Maiello led the Bonnies in shots with three each.
- The Bearcats gained some measure of revenge for a 3-1 loss to the Bonnies at the Marra Complex last season.
Next Up: The Bonnies will open Big 4 play on Tuesday, Aug. 25, when they visit Canisius. Match time will be 7 p.m.
