GENEVA, Ohio - Senior Tanja Kirmse got the St. Bonaventure women's swimming and diving team off to a strong start Wednesday by writing her name into the Bonnies record books.
As a team, the Bonnies stand eighth overall after the first day of competition.
Leading off the 800-yd freestyle relay, Kirmse swam a time of 1:48.63 which sets a new St. Bonaventure varsity record.
The relay team went on to finish in seventh place. The team of Kirmse, Maggie Woods, Rachel Taylor and Shannon Haberman swam a final time of 7:27.60.
In the first race of the night, the 200-yd medley relay the Bonnies finished 12th overall. Devon McFadden, Maria Rocchi, Elizabeth Malone and Bridget Jordan combined to post a final time of 1:46.28.
Head coach Krista Carlson was pleased with her team performance following the first day of the meet.
"Tonight our team saw huge improvements in our relays," the second year coach said. "Each swimmer really stepped up tonight and was ready to swim fast."
The Bonnies will look to continue to climb up the leaderboard as the Atlantic 10 Championships continue Thursday. Prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the top 16 finishers returning for the finals at 6:00 p.m.
