DOVER, Del. – The St. Bonaventure University women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season Saturday morning with a convincing 20-8 win at Delaware State, opening strong and then riding a dominating second half to cruise to victory.
Rachel Perla netted four goals, adding two assists to power the Bonnies attack. Scarlet Jaworski and Mikayla Place each found the net three times apiece with Rylee Arnold, Taylor Fallon and Maddison Appel all scoring twice each.
In all, 10 different Bonnies found the net on the day and St. Bonaventure outshot the Tigers 41-18 including 21-5 during the second half.
St. Bonaventure (1-0) never trailed, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just over three minutes in. Jaworski netted the first goal of the season at the 27:49 mark, quickly followed by another tally from Place.
Another goal from Jaworski along with scores from Arnold and LeighAnn Stauffer gave the Bonnies a 5-0 advantage eight minutes in.
The closest the Tigers would get was a 7-4 score with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. St. Bonaventure finished the half with scores from Perla and Olivia MacDonald, both assisted by Place, to take a 9-4 cushion.
The teams went to halftime with a 10-6 score, but St. Bonaventure would dominate the second half.
The Bonnies ran off six unanswered goals following the break, including back-to-back goals from Taylor Fallon as the visitors established control.
St. Bonaventure outscored Delaware State (0-3) by a 10-2 margin during the second half.
Perla's six points led the way while Place finished with five.
Kerrigan Cummins earned the win in the cage, making seven saves for St. Bonaventure.
The Bonnies return to action on Friday, March 4 at Robert Morris.
GAME NOTES: Saturday's game was the first for St. Bonaventure under new head coach Chelsea Rosiek … the Bonnies caused 17 turnovers by the Tigers … the Bonnies open the season with a victory for the first time since the 2013 season … the four goals by Perla, a redshirt sophomore, are a career high.
