ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team tried to play spoiler on Friday afternoon, attempting to foil George Mason's plans of securing a bid in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The Bonnies looked for a time like they might do just that, but Mason overpowered Bona in the waning minutes for a 17-10 victory at a rainy Marra Athletics Complex.

As the game began under a driving rain, it appeared as though the Patriots (10-4, 5-2 Atlantic 10) would control things. George Mason grabbed a 2-0 lead before the game was two minutes old and, after a goal from Bona's Taylor Fallon, moved ahead by a 5-1 score with 21:03 left in the first period.

Bona (3-12, 1-6) roared back, however, scoring four unassisted goals to tie the contest at 5-5 on a goal from Maddison Appel following a Mason penalty with 8:16 remaining before intermission.

Mason moved back ahead on a free position goal from Alexa McGovern at the 5:55 mark, but the Bonnies tied the game again with 44 seconds remaining when Molly Driscoll found Fallon in front for a 6-6 deadlock.

A Bonnies foul set the Patriots up with a free position attempt with just two seconds left in the half, and Jacquelyn Spalding sent the visitors to halftime ahead by one after depositing her shot in the back of the net as the buzzer sounded.

The teams were even in shots at 16 apiece during the opening 30 minutes, but Mason would wear the Bonnies down over the long haul, holding a 21-9 edge in shots over the second half.

Rachel Perla tied the game again to open the second half, scoring on a free position shot just over two minutes into the period, and the teams exchanged goals again with Place making it an 8-8 score three minutes later.

That's when Mason pulled ahead, however, breaking the tie with 23:12 to play on a goal from Chachi Kelehan. That tally ignited what became a 5-0 run by the Patriots to seize a 13-8 advantage with just over 11 minutes to go.

Perla and Fallon scored back-to-back to push within 13-10 with 9:41 showing on the clock, but it would be as close as the Bonnies would get.

Fallon scored three times and also had two assists while Place and Appel each scored twice apiece and also both had two helpers.

McGovern scored five times for the Patriots.

Kerrigan Cummins made 12 saves for St. Bonaventure while Mason's Elizabeth Benedetto turned away 11 shots.

Bona led in draw controls, 16-12, paced by six from Scarlet Jaworski.

The Bonnies return to action Sunday at noon vs. Davidson at the Marra Athletics Complex.
