ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The second goal of the afternoon from Morgan Bower of Saint Joseph's, coming at the 81:48 mark, broke what was a 1-1 tie and sent the visiting Hawks to a 2-1 victory over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies celebrated Senior Day under brilliant sunny skies and unseasonably warm conditions with temperatures hovering in the mid-70s. After St. Bonaventure's five seniors were honored in pre-game, Saint Joseph's (10-5-3, 5-3-2 Atlantic 10) took the momentum in the 17th minute.
With the Bona keeper out of the net attempting to play a loose ball in front, Bower took advantage and was able to dribble around the goalie. She finished her breakaway by burying her shot in the net for a 1-0 lead.
After the Hawks dominated the first half, the Bonnies (2-14-3, 2-6-2) came alive after intermission.
SBU's Sydney Cerza blasted a shot off the crossbar in the 58th minute from 20 yards away in a bid for the tie. Seven minutes later, a volley in the box between Cerza and Gretta LaCouture resulted in another shot by Cerza that was caught by the Hawks goalkeeper.
Finally, in the 67th minute the Bonnies broke through.
Cerza headed a 50/50 ball from just past midfield to Mariah Marrero outside the 18-yard box. Marrero corralled the pass, pushed the ball forward on one touch, then drove a shot to the far post past the goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie.
St. Bonaventure seemed to have all the momentum at that point. The Bonnies remained on the attack as LaCouture received a cross from Jessica Scruggs at the top of the box, rocketing a shot right on net that was denied.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Saint Joseph's would score the difference maker with just over nine minutes to play. The winning scoring sequence began with a bouncing ball in front that hit off multiple players before Lauren Dimes centered a pass to Bower who was able to go to the lower left of the net for the 2-1 score.
The best final effort for the equalizer came from Cerza at the 88:02 mark as she took a free kick from Sydney Cassagnol and headed a shot on net that was saved. Cerza finished her sophomore season with three shots and an assist.
Before the game, the Bonnies honored seniors Cassagnol, Alex Pochop, Beth Moore, Brittany Tubiolo and Danielle Vis. Moore started the game in net and made one save.
Lauren Malcolm also turned away five shots in net for St. Bonaventure.
