STORYLINE
The St. Bonaventure University softball team heads to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase for five games against Georgetown, UMass Lowell and host UNC-Wilmington. The trip to North Carolina is the Bonnies' second time playing in the state, first opening up their season in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic in February. This marks St. Bonaventure's final season-opening tournament before returning north for the remainder of the regular season.
LAST TIME OUT
The St. Bonaventure University softball team swept its two games against Cleveland State and Jacksonville in its final contests in the Green and Gold Classic.
The two Bona starting pitchers shined in the circle, as Rylee Hehir and Josie Borysevicz both earned complete-game wins. For the freshman Hehir, the win in game one was the first of her career.
Against Cleveland State, Alexandra Piergustavo delivered a three-run home run for her second of the season.
Alissa Karjel came through with a seventh inning, go-ahead RBI double in game two that broke a scoreless tie.
Borysevicz, Piergustavo and freshman Elizabeth Enovitch (4-for-14, double, stolen base) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
SCOUTING THE BONNIES
- In the Jacksonville Green and Gold Classic, Alexandra Piergustavo emerged as a valuable run producer for the Bonnies. In the tournament, she drove in six runs, three of which coming on a three-run homer to help the Bonnies to a 6-1 win over Cleveland State Sunday. In the team's first 18 games, the sophomore leads the team in RBIs (13), doubles (four), home runs (two), slugging percentage (.512) and extra-base hits (six).
- Hailey Blencowe has been the Bonnies' most consistent hitter so far this season with a team-high .326 batting average.
- Desiree Gonzalez has produced atop the Bona batting order, scoring a team-high 10 runs and swiping a Bonaventure-best four bases.
- In the circle, Josie Borysevicz has emerged as the team's ace. She's been credited with four of the team's six wins, grabbing two in the Green and Gold Classic. She's coming off a complete-game win over Jacksonville on Sunday.
- Senior Kristen Hickling has logged the second-most innings in the circle for the Bonnies this season with 33 in nine appearances and five starts. Freshman Rylee Hehir earned her first career win in complete-game fashion against Cleveland State on Sunday.
GEORGETOWN 4-15
- The Georgetown Hoyas went 9-35 last season, and they return 10 players and have brought in four freshmen.
- Mallory Belknap is the catalyst for the Hoyas as she is hitting .444 with 28 hits and nine runs scored.
- The Hoyas have seven players who have hit a home run so far this season.
- Katie Vannicola is the leader in the circle for Georgetown. She has started nine games and appeared in five other games throwing 117 innings, striking out 94, issuing 80 walks and allowing 155 hits. Vannicola's ERA is 8.55
- Anna Brooks Pacha is the second pitcher for the Hoyas as she has started 10 games. Her ERA is 5.92, tossing 51.2 innings, issuing 50 walks and striking out 61.
UNC WILMINGTON 13-5-1
- The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks finished last season at 29-21, and they were picked to finish seventh in the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll.
- Rachel Willis leads a balanced offensive attack for the Seahawks. She is hitting .385 with 20 hits, 20 runs scored, five doubles and nine RBIs.
- Lauren Moore and Nella Chamblee follow the attack as they are both hitting over .315. Moore has worked 19 hits while Chamblee has 15 of her own. Chamblee has 16 RBIs on the year and Moore has eight RBIs.
- Jordan Payton leads the Seahawks in the circle. Payton has been stellar so far in the season, starting nine games, tossing 61 innings, striking out 46 and issuing 12 walks. Payton's ERA is 0.80.
UMASS LOWELL 5-8
- The UMass Lowell River Hawks finished last season 11-39.
- Courtney Cashman and Marianne Sparacia lead the River Hawks offensively. Sparacia is hitting team-best .469 with 15 hits. Cashman is hitting .310 with 13 hits.
- Sydney Barker has two home runs and nine RBIs as the team's top run producer.
- UMass Lowell has three players hitting over .300 with a minimum of 25 plate appearances.
- Kaysee Talick and Lauren Ramirez have started 12 of the 13 games for the River Hawks. Both have tossed over 35 innings. Talick has an ERA of 3.93 and Ramirez has a 4.82 ERA. Talick has only issued 12 walks on the season and struck out 21 batters. Ramirez has issued 21 walks and struck out 24.
