@BonniesSoftball Heads to Florida to Compete in USF Under Armour Invite

USF UNDER ARMOUR INVITE
March 3- vs. Penn – 11:30 a.m., vs. Western Michigan – 2:00 p.m.
March 4- vs. Central Michigan – 12:30 p.m., vs. Fort Wayne – 3:00 p.m.
March 5- vs. Ball State – 9:00 a.m.

STORYLINE
After a week-long hiatus, the St. Bonaventure University softball team will head to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF Under Armour Invite to play five games.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies opened their 2017 season in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic, in which they picked up a win in their season opener over Canisius (Feb. 17). Desiree Gonzalez hit a two-run triple, and Hailey Blencowe knocked the game-winning home run as Josie Borysevicz picked up the win in the circle.

In the five games in Charlotte, N.C., Gonzalez earned a .429 batting average as she went 6-for-14 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Blencowe went 5-for-15 with two runs scored, and Alexandra Piergustavo drove in three runs.

PENN

  • Friday's game against the Bonnies will be Penn's 2017 season opener.
  • Penn went 23-11 last season.
  • The Quakers return multiple First Team All-Ivy honorees in senior outfielder Leah Allen and senior pitcher Alexis Sargent.
  • Allen is the Penn record holder with 24 career home runs after posting five during her junior campaign. She also tallied a Penn single-season record five triples and an Ivy League-best 41 RBIs a year ago.
  • Sargent started 24 contests in the circle for the Quakers, leading the Ivy League with a 2.29 ERA and 124 strikeouts en route to 12 wins.
  • Quakers also return Sarah Cwiertnia, who batted .347 last season with 34 hits and 12 RBIs. Sam Pederson also returns for the Quakers as she batted .391 a season ago with 52 hits, 14 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

WESTERN MICHIGAN

  • Western Michigan comes into the USF Under Armour Invite with a 6-5 record so far in the 2017 season.
  • Last season, WMU went 22-28.
  • The Broncos return 14 players from last year's roster.
  • Mackenzie Swinehart leads the team with 13 hits with a .382 batting average.
  • Kelsea Cichocki is batting .429 with 12 hits, two home runs and six RBIs.
  • Five different hitters have hit a homerun for the Broncos.
  • Jordan Kurth leads the pitching staff with three wins so far this season. She has thrown 34 innings, striking out 21 and issuing four walks. Her ERA is 3.18.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN

  • Central Michigan boasts a 4-6 record so far this season.
  • CMU was picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference West Division Preseason Poll.
  • Finished 24-27-1 in 2016.
  • Maison Kalina and Lacy Tolfree lead the Chippewas early in the season with nine hits apiece. Rachel Vieira leads the team with two home runs and eight RBIs.
  • Central Michigan has six hitters who are batting above .300.
  • Rachel Knapp is the ace in the circle for Central Michigan. She has posted a 3-3 record and has thrown 41 innings, striking out 49, giving up 14 walks and ERA of 3.24.

FORT WAYNE

  • The Fort Wayne Mastodons have logged two wins so far this season.
  • The Dons return 11 letter winners overall from a season ago.
  • Finished last season with an 11-40 record
  • Lauren Watson lead the Dons with a .324 batting average and hits with 12
  • Kelly Pevely has three home runs in the early season to go along with 10 hits and four RBI's
  • Elizabeth Snodgrass and Bailey Benefiel lead IPFW in the circle with both throwing over 23 innings. Snodgross has a 3.90 ERA, with six strikeouts and 10 walks. Benefiel has a 5.39 ERA with 14 strikeouts and eight walks.

NEXT TIME OUT
The Bonnies will stay in Florida for a doubleheader against South Dakota State on March 7, and then take on Niagara at Daytona State Community College for a doubleheader on March 9.
