STORYLINE
After 23 games down south to start the season, the St. Bonaventure University softball team travels back north for a doubleheader at Youngstown State Thursday and its Atlantic 10 debut at UMass this weekend.
LAST TIME OUT
The St. Bonaventure University softball team split its final two games in the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase at UNC Wilmington, starting off the day with a 5-4 win over UMass Lowell.
Down 3-2 in game one, the Bonnies rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to hold on and defeat UMass Lowell in the rematch.
Desiree Gonzalez led the Bonnies offensively all day as she homered in each game. Against UMass Lowell she also knocked a double and had two RBIs.
Josie Borysevicz tossed all seven innings and struck out five to earn her fifth win of the season in game one.
In the team's second game of the day, Kaitlin Caringi hammered her first-career home run to help the Brown and White keep pace.
FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
- Desiree Gonzalez provided the offensive spark for the Bonnies this past weekend, earning four hits, all of which were extra-base hits, as she knocked two home runs, a double and a triple while also scoring three runs. On the season, she is hitting .312 with 10 RBIs and a team-best eight extra-base hits.
- Kelly Farrell boasted the top Bona batting average in the Fayetteville Showcase at .400 with a 4-for-10 line, including a double, run scored and two RBIs.
- Freshman Elizabeth Enovitch has emerged as a speedster toward the top of the Bona batting order. The centerfielder led all other participants at UNC Wilmington as she went 2-for-2 on stolen-base attempts. On the season, she is hitting .238 with four stolen bases and the second-most runs scored on the team with nine.
- The Brown and White have found their power stroke, having hammered eight total home runs so far this season, four of which coming in the five games at UNC Wilmington. Gonzalez and Piergustavo have three apiece while Kaitlin Caringi and Hailey Blencowe each have one.
- Josie Borysevicz continues to be the go-to for St. Bonaventure in the circle. At 5-4, she's tossed five complete games and struck out 36, including 10 in her three starts in Wilmington.
ABOUT YOUNGSTOWN STATE (6-17)
- The Youngstown State Penguins have been idle since Feb. 11 when they competed in a tournament at UNC Wilmington in which they won two of their four games, both coming against Siena before splitting a doubleheader against Akron on Tuesday.
- The Penguins were picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll after finishing third in 2016 at 30-21, 15-7. YSU returns 18 letterwinners and nine starters from last season.
- Returning for the Penguins are All-Horizon League First-Team selection junior outfielder Cali Mikovich, second-team all-league pick senior outfielder Sarah Dowd and All-Freshman Team choice sophomore pitcher Paige Geanangel.
- Mikovich leads the team with a .288 batting average with nine runs scored and 17 hits. Dowd has a team-best 13 RBIs so far this season.
- So far in the circle, Maddi Lusk and Caitlyn Minney have mostly split time as Lusk has logged 78.1 innings pitched and Minney has 63.2 innings. Lusk has been credited with four of the team's six wins and has struck out 58 while Minney has earned two wins with 34 strikeouts.
UMASS 8-14 (0-0)
- UMass finished last season 26-24 and were picked to finish fourth in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll.
- After starting the season 3-14, the Minutewomen have stormed out to a five-game win streak heading into A-10 play. They have defeated Seton Hall, Iowa State, Lehigh and UC Davis in the streak.
- Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Erin Stacevicz lead the Minutewomen at the plate. Both are hitting above .324 with Stavinoha hitting .362, 21 hits and 18 RBIs. Stacevicz has 23 hits and has scored 14 runs.
- Candace Denis has been a thief on the basepaths as she has swiped 14 bases and has only been thrown out one time.
- Denis is also the ace for Umass, she has started nine games and has a 1.72 ERA after tossing 65 innings. Denis has 59 strikeouts, issued 35 walks and has given up 42 hits. Meg Colleran is the second pitcher for the Minutewomen. Colleran has also started nine games and has a 5.32 ERA, throwing 47.1 innings, issuing 10 walks, striking out 21 and has given up 59 hits.
