The St. Bonaventure University softball team opens up both its home and Atlantic 10 schedule as La Salle comes to Joyce Field for a three-game weekend series.
CANCER AWARENESS WEEKEND
For Saturday's action, both teams will be wearing pink wristbands to raise awareness for breast cancer and gold shoelaces to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. However, the St. Bonaventure softball program would like the day to be dedicated to all cancer survivors, as the Joyce Field facility will be lined with different color ribbons representing the different types of cancers.
SBU softball alumna and cancer survivor Emily Belfield '16 will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
All are welcome to donate to Go4theGoal.org for pediatric cancer support and ww5.komen.org for breast cancer.
LAST TIME OUT
The SBU softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Youngstown State on Thursday, March 23 despite stellar pitching.
Freshman Sam Wood delivered four scoreless innings in her relief appearance in game one, while Josie Borysevicz tossed all six innings in game two, surrendering one run.
The Bonnies were scheduled to open up their 2017 Atlantic 10 schedule at UMass last weekend, but the games were canceled due to unplayable conditions.
FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
- Atop the Bona batting order, Desiree Gonzalez provides the offensive spark as she leads the squad with eight extra-base hits. She's the lone Bonnie to record a triple with two while also knocking three doubles and a team-best three homers. The senior has also made it around to score 13 times and is one of two Bonnies with a double-digit RBI total so far this season.
- Alexandra Piergustavo continues to be the St. Bonaventure run producer in the middle of the order. Her three home runs are tied for the most on the team with Gonzalez, and her 16 RBIs lead the squad. Her consistency has shown, as her 21 total hits lead the team, and she has landed hits in the last five games.
- Freshman Elizabeth Enovitch has emerged as a threat on the base paths in her first campaign with the Brown and White. She has swiped four bases and dropped in 10 hits with a pair of doubles while also scoring nine runs. She's been perfect in centerfield with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 21 chances.
- Kiera Lorenzo, Alissa Karjel and Morgan Phillips have also been valuable bats in the heart of the Bonnies' order. Lorenzo has come through with eight RBIs -- the third most on the team -- while Karjel's four doubles are tied for the most on the team. Phillips' 15 hits are tied for the third most on the team and she's also knocked three doubles.
- In the circle, Josie Borysevicz continues to be the go-to for the Brown and White. The junior is coming off a strong game against Youngstown State, as she threw six shutout innings while giving up four hits and no earned runs. She has been credited with five of the team's seven wins and has tossed 64.1 innings. Rylee Hehir has logged the second-most innings in the circle to Borysevicz at 40.1 in five starts with 22 strikeouts. Kristen Hickling has also made seven starts for the Bonnies so far this year.
