ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team fell to La Salle, 4-2, in its home opener Saturday afternoon at a frigid Joyce Field.
After a 70-minute delay due to low temperatures, La Salle jumped on the board in the top of the first. Back-to-back Bona throwing errors allowed a pair of runs to score, putting the Explorers ahead, 2-0.
La Salle extended its lead with a run in the top of the second to go ahead, 3-0.
The Bonnies escaped the third inning in exciting fashion as a popup in foul territory bounced off Alexandra Deal's glove and landed safely in the bare hand of first baseman Alexandra Piergustavo.
St. Bonaventure rode the momentum of the inning-ending catch to score its lone runs of the game in the bottom half of the third.
With Deal on second and Kelly Farrell on first, Desiree Gonzalez lined a double down the leftfield line to plate Deal. Elizabeth Enovitch later drove in Farrell with a knock to the right side to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of La Salle.
Down 4-2 in the final inning, Deal worked her second hit of the game with two down to bring up Farrell representing the tying run. But, Farrell was sent down and La Salle held on for the win.
Josie Borysevicz went the distance in the circle for the Bonnies, delivering four strikeouts and surrendering five hits and two earned runs in the seven innings of work.
Of the four Bona hits, Deal earned two, both as infield singles. Gonzalez and Kiera Lorenzo made up the other two with a hit apiece.
Deal and Alissa Karjel each stole a base for the Bonnies.
The two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
