Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at Niagara

Box Score

LEWISTON, N.Y. – Two second half goals were the difference as Niagara bested visiting St. Bonaventure, 2-0, in Little Three women's soccer action Friday night.

Niagara had one shot ricochet off the post and another off the cross bar before finally breaking through 56 minutes in when Eva Bachmann drove a right-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box in for the 1-0 score.

The Purple Eagles added insurance in the 72nd minute. Freshman Bayley Sullivan found the back of the net after a Niagara corner kick led to a scrum in front, allowing Sullivan to clean up the loose ball for the goal.

Bella May created a couple of chances for the Bonnies during the first half, including the 22nd minute when she intercepted a Niagara pass, then struck a shot from 25 yards out that went wide of the goal.

In the 39th minute, Bella Marra worked on the wing and found Gretta LaCouture in the center of the box. The Bonnies junior received Marra's pass and delivered a header just wide.

St. Bonaventure also created scoring opportunities in the final minutes – Jessica Scruggs and Sydney Cerza worked together for a chance during the 86th minute, with Cerza's shot ultimately blocked inside the box by a defender. Later, Sabrina Sousa-Sampson placed a shot on net that was turned away by the Purple Eagles keeper. Niagara keepers Sabrina Locas and Shania van Nuland combined to make four saves for the hosts.

Bonnies freshmen Alex Thompson and Rachel Collins each earned their first collegiate starts while junior Tori Bernardo picked up her second career start.

Next up for the Bonnies is the home opener as the squad debuts at the Marra Athletics Complex Sunday afternoon vs. defending Mid-American Conference champion Kent State. That contest is slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
