Bonnies Earn 1-1 Draw With Richmond Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Marley Jarvis netted her second goal of the season late in the first half and that stood up until the waning minutes of regulation as ultimately the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw with visiting Richmond on Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

Playing in unseasonably sweltering conditions with temperatures easily clearing 80 degrees, the two sides played scoreless through the first 43 minutes.

Then, as halftime neared, a Richmond foul set up the Bonnies scoring play. On a set piece, Bella May sent a free kick from the left into the box, allowing Jarvis to deliver a header over the shoulder of the Spiders goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

It seemed as though that would be enough as the Bonnies led with less than three minutes left in regulation.

Then, a turnover by the hosts allowed Lexi Prillaman to break free on a one-on-one, drilling a shot into the back of the net for the tie at the 87:41 mark. As regulation ended Mariah Marrero also had a one-on-one opportunity, sending a shot just wide seconds before the buzzer.

Both teams had opportunities during overtime. During the first extra period, Alex Thompson worked on the near sideline, sending a pass into the center of the box to Marrero. Marrero's first attempt bounced off a Spiders defender, but she worked free to deliver a shot right on net which was denied by goalkeeper Olivia Sjodin.

Six minutes into the first overtime, Bella Marra sent a sailing shot just over the crossbar from 30 yards away.

Bonnies keeper Lauren Malcolm made a number of outstanding saves during extra time – in the 99th minute, Brooke Beam fired a rocket that forced a diving stop from Malclolm. Then, with just 23 seconds left in the second overtime, Malcolm made a fully extended dive to her left to deny another bid by the Spiders.

In all, Malcolm finished with nine saves on the day.

Despite the conditions, Sydney Cassagnol, Maddie Mason, Sabrina Sousa-Sampson, Danielle Vis and Bella Marra all played over 100 minutes.

St. Bonaventure remains at home to host UMass on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
