Flyers Take Thursday Softball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Visiting Dayton controlled game one and withstood a Bonnies rally in the late game to score a doubleheader sweep over the St. Bonaventure softball team Thursday afternoon at Joyce Field.

Game One – Dayton 9, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 innings) |

An eight-run fifth inning broke open a close game and sent the Flyers to victory in the opener.

In the first inning, the Bonnies got out of a runners at second and third jam when McKenna Holtz made a running catch in shallow right to end the threat.

In the second, the Bonnies escaped trouble again when Hailey Blencowe picked off a blistering liner at shortstop and threw to third for an inning-ending double play.

Dayton would finally push the first run of the game across in the fourth and broke the contest open in the fifth. The Flyers would plate eight runs in the frame, batting around as they took complete control.

Brooke Kane-Walker ripped a double and Holtz singled to account for the Bonnies hits in the opener as Manda Cash tossed a shutout for the Flyers.

Game Two – Dayton 8, St. Bonaventure 4 |

Dayton led early before the Bonnies battled back to tie in the middle innings, but the visitors would answer back late for the victory.

The Flyers set the tone in the first, grabbing two runs on a Lisa Tassi single and Kailee Budicin double.

Bona got on the board in the third.

Alexandra Deal got things started with two outs by doubling to center and would score one batter later when Blencowe smacked another double to right, plating Deal for a 3-1 score.

With the Flyers ahead by three, the Bonnies made it a brand new ballgame in the fifth with three runs.

The Bonnies did all of their damage with two outs. With the bases loaded, Olivia Golay worked a walk to force in the first run to pull within two.

Then, Brooke Kane-Walker punched a hit through the right side to score both Nicole Antonacci and Deal for the 4-4 tie.

Dayton moved back ahead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Bona threatened in the bottom half of the frame, putting runners at second and third following an infield single by Elizabeth Enovich and a walk to Deal. A fly out ended the inning without any damage done, however.

The Bonnies and Flyers are set to finish the three-game series Friday at noon.
