Bonnies Bats Go Cold As UMass Takes First Two Games of Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – UMass limited the Bonnies to just six hits combined for the day as the St. Bonaventure University softball dropped an Atlantic 10 doubleheader to the first-place Minutewomen. UMass took game one, 10-1, and followed up by winning game two, 4-1.

Grace Perechinsky had two hits and Alexandra Piergustavo doubled with an RBI in game one. Kaitlin Caringi added an RBI in game two for Bona.

Game 1 – UMass 10, St. Bonaventure 1 – 6 Innings |

The Minutewomen jumped out to an 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Melissa Garcia in the first inning. Later, Garcia put UMass up by three runs on a two-run home run in the third.

After UMass extended its lead to 4-0, Piergustavo smacked a double that landed just inside the right field foul line, allowing Brooke Kane-Walker to cross the plate to cut the deficit to three runs.

With the game at a 4-1 spread heading for the sixth, a six-run inning from the Minutewomen put the game out of reach.

Rylee Hehir was charged with the loss after working five innings (7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Grace Van Horn pitch the final inning for St. Bonaventure, allowing three earned runs and three hits.

Game 2 – UMass 5, St. Bonaventure 1 |

The Bonnies grabbed momentum in the fourth inning by scoring first when Alexandra Deal scored on a run-scoring single by Caringi to the right side.

UMass, however, evened the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kaycee Carbone in the top of the fifth.

The game was a pitchers duel for most of the game until the top of the seventh when the Minutewomen bats exploded for four runs led by a bases-clearing double from Madison Gimpl.

Josie Borysevicz tossed 6.2 innings in the circle for the Bonnies (8 H, 5 ER, 5 BB, 3 K). Sam Wood worked the last out of the seventh and did not allow a hit.

St. Bonaventure returns to Joyce Field Sunday afternoon for the finale of the three-game series vs. UMass.
